August 2
The order was given to attack Hiroshima on August 6.
August 6
The airplane Enola-Gay dropped an Atomic Bomb at 8:15 a.m. over Hiroshima.
August 8
The order, "Kokura shall be the first target, Nagasaki the second" was given.
August 9
At 2:49 a.m. the Bockscar carrying an Atomic Bomb flew from the Tinian Base for Kokura. There were many clouds over Kokura and the target was difficult to find, so the plane flew towards Nagasaki. It came southward from Kokura through Kumamoto and Shimabara peninsula and reached Nagasaki at 10:58 a.m. Because of the heavy cloud cover, the crew started to locate the target with radar.
The observation plane dropped a sonde with a parachute. Then the Nagasaki shipyard was sighted between the clouds, so they pushed the button to release the Bomb. The explosion occurred at 11:02 am. The plane escaped toward the east, just after dropping the Bomb and started for the Okinawa Islands, reaching Okinawa at 1 p.m.
