Thermal Effects on Vehicles

This photo sequence shows a typical school bus being exposed to a nuclear blast at the Nevada Test Site. The test was Upshot-Knothole Grable, a 15 Kt atomic cannon shot, on May 25, 1953. The bus was 884 meters (2,900 feet) from ground zero. The explosion was an air burst of 160 meters (524 feet) above the ground.

The exposure to thermal radiation was 50 cal/cm2, about one-half of that experienced at ground zero in Hiroshima.
