National Museum of Nuclear Science & History
Overview
Originally known as the National Atomic Museum and located on Kirtland Air Force Base. After September 11, 2001, due to heightened security measures, access to the museum was no longer possible and the museum was relocated. The Museum re-opened in its current location in southeast Albuquerque in April 2009, when it was renamed The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History.
The museum consists of two primary sections, the actual museum building itself and a nine-acre outdoor exhibit area, known as Hertiage Park.
What You'll See
Visitors begin their museum tour by choosing one of three themes; history, science or technology. The history section of the musseum covers the dawn of the atomic age through the Cold War. It features bomb casings of both the Little Boy and Fat Man bombs. A replica of the Gadget is also on display. In the Cold War portion of the musuem, various nuclear develiery systems are on display. The science section highlights the pioneers of the atom, as well as covering the history of nuclear medicine and how it contributed to the advancement of medical technology. In the technology section of the museum, nuclear power and its consquences are presented.
Covering nine-acres, Hertiage Park features various nuclear weapon delivery systems, such as a B-47, a B-52, and a Minuteman missle. In addtion, a Trinity Tower Replica and a B-29 are on display. The Atomic Cannnon is also showcased.
Public Tours Dates and Times
The museum is open daily 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Docent-Guided Tours are available as well. Adult admission (18-59) is $15, Seniors (60+) is $13, and Youth (6-17) is $11.
How to Get There
The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is located at 601 Eubank at Southern Blvd. SE, six blocks south of Central Ave in Albuquerque. We are just east of Kirtland Air Force Base and in the Sandia Science and Technology Park. The exit off of Interstate 40 is #165.
