The 55-foot wooden pole with the crows-nest on top was used to asses weather conditions at the site. Two sensors, one at the top and one at the bottom, relayed a tomspheric pressure and temperature readings to a station in the launch control center. In conjunction with the anemometer pole, which captured wind speed and direction, crews would make sure theses readings were within specific parameters when fueling and de-fueling operations of the missiles highly combustable and toxic liquid propellants occured.
