W48 Artillery-Fired Atomic Projectile

The first and only time a 15 kiloton nuclear artilley shell was fired at the Nevada Test Site was the Grable shot on May 25, 1953 utilizing a 280mm gun. Designed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, approzximately 1,000 W48 nuclear artillery shells were produced and deployed by the Army and Marine forces from 1963 through 1991.
