Survivors
This photo, taken at approximately 11 a.m. on Aug. 6, 1945, is among the first known surviving photos documenting survivors of the atomic attack on Hiroshima. The photographer, Yoshito Matsushige, was a staff photographer at the regional newspaper Chugoku Shimbun and a Japanese military photographer. Despite being exposed to radiation and having injuries from flying glass, he rushed outside with his camera to document the large number of dead and injured awaiting treatment at Hiroshima Commercial High School for Girls and Daiichi Prefectural Junior High School near his home. This photo was taken near the neighborhood police station.
